Police Warning After Drink Drive Collision
Police in Magherafelt have slammed those who choose to drink and drive following a collision in County L'Derry.
The incident happened at around lunchtime on Monday 20 May in Straw, a small village just outside Draperstown.
A "clearly drunk driver" crashed and rolled his vehicle, causing a "needless waste" of police resources, an officer explained.
Posting on social media with a picture showing the vehicle lying on its side, police warned about the potentially fatal dangers of driving while under the influence: "Its sickening to be having the same conversation again after another collision near Draperstown at lunchtime today. Crews also risked their own safety by climbing into the car to provide first aid to the clearly drunk driver after he rolled it.
"As well as a needless waste of our resources, a fire service crew were also required to cut the driver out. Someone is going to die as a direct consequence of these selfish individuals - and it's rarely the drunk driver.
"We are constantly catching and arresting drink drivers and thereby preventing collisions, but it isn't possible to catch them all.
"It may sound like a stuck record but the mindset urgently needs to change."
It comes after an earlier collision on Tuesday 14 May which saw a jeep plough into the back of another car and force it into a wall, leaving three innocent people with significant injuries.

Over 800 young people from schools in Lisburn and Castlereagh attended a hard-hitting road safety message at the PSNI Road Safe Roadshow on 19 November. The roadshow, supported by AXA Insurance and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, aims to educate young drivers about the dangers of irresponsible driving.

Local doctors are calling for the Stormont Executive to consider lowering the drink drive limit to "save lives". Following this week's Daíl legislation reducing the legal blood-alcohol level from 80 to 50mg, Northern Ireland doctors said today that the law should be changed here too.
