SF 'Appalled' At Govt Treatment Of Historical Abuse Victims
Sinn Fein's European candidate and current MEP Martina Anderson has condemned the actions of Secretary of State Karen Bradley in stalling the redress scheme for victims of historical institutional abuse in Northern Ireland.
Ms Anderson made the comments after the Conservative MP opted to delay legislation and table 11 further questions on the scheme, which was last week submitted as part of the Stormont talks process.
A redress scheme for victims was recommended by the Hart Inquiry in 2017. The Sinn Fein candidate said she is "appalled" at the trauma and stress being heaped upon victims as the matter is further delayed.
"Rather than getting on with implementing the Hart recommendations and putting in place the required legal and financial framework to assist victims and survivors, she continues to stall and to use victims as political pawns.
"That is completely unacceptable and it needs to stop.
"Sinn Féin will be convening further multi-party talks tomorrow in order to keep the pressure on Karen Bradley to belatedly do the right thing and bring forward the required legislation for victims and survivors of historical institutional abuse."
County Antrim Coastal Route To Close For Resurfacing
A road along the County Antrim coast in Islandmagee is set to close for resurfacing work.
The Low Road will undergo a £429,000 scheme which will see the surface improved from the Millbay Road junction for 3km towards Reids Road.
Work will begin on the project on Monday 27 May and is expected to be complete by 28 June.
A full road closure will be in place from 7.30am to 6pm on the weekdays during the scheme.
A two-way diversion will be in operation on B150 Reids Road, B150 Middle Road, B150 Mullaghbouy Road, B150 Portmuck Road and B90 Brownsbay Road.
Drivers should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the area.
