Police Appeal For Information Following Death Of L'Derry Teen

Police in L'Derry are searching for two men believed to have fled the scene of a crashed stolen car moments before it caught fire and killed Caoimhin Cassidy.

The body of Caoimhin (18) was found inside a burnt Mazda 6 in the early hours of Saturday, 01 June.

The car is believed to have been stolen earlier that same day. It crashed on Fairview Road, L'Derry.

A postmortem examination has now established that Caoimhin was 'not seriously physically injured as a result of a crash' and 'was in fact most likely still alive when the blaze started'.

It is understood that two males were seen running from the scene of the crash moments before the car caught fire. Police have said that there was also a report of a male, possibly injured, seen walking towards the border a short time later.

Police have appealed to anyone who may have seen Caoimhin earlier that day, Saturday 01 June – and anyone he may have been with – and also anyone who may have seen the red Mazda 6, to contact them. Police said that "any detail, no matter how small it might seem, could be invaluable".

Contact detectives at Strand Road on 101, quoting reference number 316 of 01/06/19.

Alternatively, information can be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.
