Road works begin on £500,000 Fivemiletown route
Major road works costing close to £500,000 have begun near Fivemiletown in Co Tyrone.
The 1.2km long scheme, on the A4 Ballygawley to Enniskillen Road, incorporates a climbing lane towards Fivemiletown and a right turning lane at the main Kiltermon junction. The addition of the climbing lane will provide an opportunity for motorists to safely overtake slower moving vehicles on this busy road.
Commenting on the works, NIO Minister, John Spellar said: "This is one of a number of carriageway widening schemes on the Trunk Road Network. When completed, the scheme will contribute to shorter journey times for motorists, while at the same time enhancing road safety for all users."
The Minister said his he saw these improvements are part of a wider commitment to investing in Northern Ireland’s transportation infrastructure.
Spending on roads has seen a boost in the January budget announcement, with increased funding of nearly 17%. This year’s budget of almost £234 million, will increase to nearly £280 million in 2004/2005.
