SF Mayor Lays Wreath At Somme Commemoration

Lord Mayor of Belfast John Finucane has laid a wreath to commemorate all those killed in the Battle of the Somme.

The Sinn Fein councillor attended the ceremony at the Cenotaph at City Hall early this morning, Monday 01 July.

Mr Finucane became the latest mayor from the party to mark the anniversary that has a particular meaning for the unionist community in Northern Ireland, bearing in mind the huge loss sustained by the 36th Ulster Division in 1916.

The newly elected councillor later revealed a personal connection to the occasion as he lost his great-great-grandfather on the opening day the battle. Writing on Twitter, Mr Finucane said: "As someone who lost a relative on Day 1 of the Battle of the Somme, today was both personally and politically significant for me.

"It is important that we remember their loss, & on behalf of Belfast I was proud to lay a wreath this morning."
