NI Civil Servants Strike Over Pay & Conditions
Civil servants in Northern Ireland are set to strike over pay and working conditions today, Friday 26 July.
The action follows a vote by members of the Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (Nipsa) trade union over a 1.25% pay increase and changes to their terms and conditions of employment.
The one-day strike will see rallies staged at Grosvenor Hall in Belfast and the City Hotel in L'Derry with as many as 10,000 workers expected to take to the picket line.
The action comes amid an ongoing demand crisis for MOT centres across the region, with motorists left facing a wait of up to 47 days for a test. Staff from the Driver & Vehicle Agency, who are normally exempt from strike action, have been called in to help push for their demands.
Despite the industrial action, the Department for Infrastructure has urged members of the public to turn up for their appointments today as usual and offered assurance that measures are in place to minimise disruption.
