New NI Secretary To Hold Talks With Party Leaders

Northern Ireland's new Secretary of State Julian Smith will visit the region to hold talks with each of the five main political parties today.

The MP for Yorkshire constituency Skipton and Ripon inherits the task of facilitating the Stormont talks process after Karen Bradley was sacked from her role on Wednesday by new Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The devolved administrations have been in suspension since the DUP and Sinn Fein split in a bitter row in 2017, with a fresh round of negotiations launched in April in the wake of journalist Lyra McKee's murder.

Mr Smith is set to hold talks with leaders of the five main parties today, Friday 26 July, and a series of other engagements as he gets to grip with Northern Ireland. His tenure is expected to be dominated by the challenges of Brexit and restoring the devolved institutions.
