Man Attacked By Masked Gang Wielding Hammers

A man has been left with serious head injuries after he was attacked by a masked gang armed with hammers.

Police have launched an investigation following the paramilitary style attack in the Bangor Road area of Newtownards on Thursday night, 25 July.

The victim, a man in his 20's, was targeted by the gang of men wearing high visibility jackets at around 8.45pm. He required hospital treatment for injuries sustained to his head during the vicious onslaught.

Police said a vehicle suspected of being involved was located in the town's Glen Estate a short time later.

Detective Inspector Snoddy condemned those behind the "brutal" incident. He said: "Those involved do not represent the interests of the local community and contribute nothing to it. There is absolutely no justification for an attack like this in our communities, and we must all work together to bring those responsible to justice and to stop this from happening to anyone else."

Anyone who was in the areas of the Bangor Road or the Glen Estate in Newtownards last night, or who has information which could assist the investigation is urged to call detectives in Bangor on 101, quoting reference number 2042 of 25/07/19.

Details can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
