Administrators Expected At H&W

The iconic Harland and Wolff shipyard at Titanic Belfast is expected to go into administration today, Monday 05 August.

The move, which comes after a week of protesting by workers, will place 130 jobs at risk.

A historic manufacturer for Northern Ireland, the company faces closure after its Norwegian parent company failed to secure a buyer.

With the famous yellow cranes Samson and Goliath that dominate the Belfast skyline and the Titanic as its best known vessel, the shipyard is an iconic part of Northern Ireland's industry.

Workers have occupied the site on a constant basis since Monday 29 July, calling for government intervention to renationalise the firm. Despite support from unions, the government has refused to intervene and branded the issue a commercial one.

A last minute council meeting was convened at Belfast City Hall last Friday by SDLP and Green Party representatives in a bid to save the firm, however Harland and Wolff is expected to cease operations at 5.15pm this afternoon.
