Police Treat L'Derry Bonfire As 'Hate Incident'
A bonfire that displayed flags relating to a soldier facing prosecution for Bloody Sunday murders is being treated as a hate incident.
Parachute Regiment was placed on the pyre before it was set alight in the Bogside area of L'Derry on Thursday evening, 15 August.
Union flags were also set alight as thousands watched on.
Police said the display of material has been perceived as offensive and distasteful and will be investigated as a hate incident.
A spokesperson for PSNI Foyle said on Thursday: "We are receiving a number of reports regarding offensive material on the bonfire in the Bogside area of the city. As a police service we recognise the hurt and frustration that this can cause.
"We are treating this as a hate incident and will continue to gather evidence as this evening continues. Where crimes have been committed and suspects identified they will be brought before the courts.
"As always we will continue to engage with local representatives throughout the night to ensure the safety of everyone in the city."
