CCTV Operators Help Secure Drugs Arrest
Police have thanked the eagled eyed CCTV operators who helped officers seize a quantity of heroin in Lisburn.
A male and female were caught with the substance after City Watch NI operators observed them acting suspiciously earlier today, Thursday 29 August.
They were caught entering train station toilets after leaving Lisburn Courthouse.
A PSNI spokesperson explained: "On our arrival we had to force a door and literally caught one in the act of injecting heroin, the other was searched and heroin located even though he tried his best to hide it.
"This drug ruins the life of the person taking it and the community that surrounds it.
"They are now back to court to explain their actions.
"Thank you to the City Watch NI operators who initially saw this behaviour, a good example of the great work they do and the good relationship they have with us.
"If you see anything suspicious report it to us immediately and give us a chance to react and deal with the issues we all know about."
Police can be contacted on 101 or 999 in the case of an emergency.
Over 2,000 Runners Expected At L'Derry Half Marathon
Over 2,000 runners are expected at the start line of the 38th Waterside Half Marathon in L'Derry this weekend.
Runners will wind their way from the Ebrington site start, along the banks of the Foyle, crossing both Foyle Bridge and the Peace Bridge en route to the finish on the St Columbs Park track.
Assisted Wheelchairs, racing wheelchairs and runners of all abilities including around 80 Relay teams of three, will be in the line up for the WHM- the biggest and most pretigious local road race. The assisted wheelchairs have a 9 30am start, the racers go at 9.55am, and all other runners will be off at 10am.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Michaela Boyle, wished everyone taking part a safe and enjoyable day.
She said: "The Waterside Half Marathon is one of the longest running athletics events in Ireland as it continues to prove popular with the public who have endorsed it by registering in such large numbers again this year.
"There has been a noticeable increase in runners out on our roads and greenways in recent week as they make their final preparations for race day and it is fantastic to see more and more local people reaping the health benefits of taking regular exercise and making good lifestyle choices.
"I'd like to take the opportunity to wish all of those taking part well as they finalise their preparations, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable today and reach your personal goals."
Entrants will travel from across Northern Ireland to compete, with Enniskillen based Kenyan Gideon Kimosop the clear favourite to lead them home and defending female champion Anne Marie McGlynn of Letterkenny AC tipped to retain her crown.
Disruption As Roadworks Commence In Newry
The Killeavy Road in Newry will be closed over the next two weeks as a £112,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme gets underway.
Diversions will be in place while work is carried out between 8am and 6pm on weekdays from Monday 02 September until Friday 13.
The scheme will deliver significant improvements to both the structural integrity and surface of the road.
Traffic will be diverted via Main Avenue, the A25 Calmough Road, Clanrye Avenye and vice versa.
The road will be open to traffic in the evenings during the week and all day Saturday and Sunday.
In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling through, or in the vicinity of, the works.
The Department has programmed the work and traffic management arrangements to minimise any inconvenience, however, drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys.
Work is expected to be completed by 13 September, however, this will be dependent on the progress of the scheme and on favourable weather conditions.
