Peace People Founder Ciaran McKeown Dies

Ciaran McKeown, one of the founding members of Northern Ireland's Peace People, has died aged 76.

The writer, journalist and peace activist was heavily involved in the movement that was inspired by the tragedy inflicted during The Troubles.

He died peacefully at home on Sunday after an illness and is predeceased by his wife Marianne Mcveigh and sister Maire. He leaves behind seven children and seventeen grandchildren.

'Wheelie Active Club' Launches In Fermanagh & Omagh

Children and young people with a disability will have the opportunity to try a range of multi-sports with their siblings and friends with the launch of a pilot 'Wheelie Active Club' in the Fermanagh and Omagh district.

The six week council-run programme is organised in partnership with Disability Sport Northern Ireland and will take place at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen and Omagh Leisure Complex as part of both centres' Disability Hubs.

The one-hour sessions will start at the Forum on Monday 16 September and Omagh Leisure Complex on Tuesday 17 from 5pm-6pm, led by fully qualified sports coaches.

Kevin O'Neill, Chief Executive Officer for Disability Sport NI said: "We have been delighted to see how Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have developed a range of sports and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities based around two new Disability Sports Hubs in Fermanagh and Omagh. This is following a fantastic investment into specialist equipment by the Department for Communities and Sport NI, as part of a plan to get more disabled people active across Northern Ireland.

"The new Wheelie Active Club in particular will make a fantastic difference to lives of young disabled people in the area."

Parents are advised that places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Participation on the programme costs £12.00 for the full six weeks.

Heroin Syringe Found By Children In Belfast

A suspected heroin needle has been found by children playing football in west Belfast.

The syringe was discovered along with other drug paraphernalia in an entryway in the Shankill area on Sunday 01 September.

DUP Councillor Brian Kingston confirmed the equipment was discovered by two young boys. Condemning the incident in a post on Twitter, he said: "Appalling that this was left lying in an entry. Well done getting this removed. A growing problem in the city."

Police were contacted to remove the materials.
