Cross Party Condemnation For L'Derry Violence
Political representatives have slammed those behind a bomb that was discovered in the Creggan area of L'Derry on Monday evening, 09 September.
Widespread condemnation emerged following a violent altercation between police and a group of 60-100 people that saw petrol bombs launched at PSNI vehicles.
It was later confirmed the improvised explosive device, planted by the New IRA, was left in an attempt to murder police.
Sinn Féin MP Elisha McCallion hit out at those responsible for endangering the local community. The Foyle MP said the incident has caused shock in the local area.
"Those responsible for leaving this device in such a built up area put the whole local community at risk," Ms McCallion said.
"This could have caused serious injury or worse to anyone.
"Those responsible have once again shown their complete and total disregard for the local community.
"They have nothing to offer the people of Derry and need to call an end to these reckless and futile actions immediately."
Police entered the Creggan on Monday afternoon as part of a planned operation to target the activities of the dissident republican group. A large crowd gathered in the area, prompting a police appeal for parents to use their influence and make sure their children are at home.
Alliance Party Justice spokesperson, Stewart Dickson MLA, spoke out to condemn the rioting.
The MLA said: "Once again we see violence on the streets and police officers attacked. There can be no excuse or justification for attacks on the police who were responding to reports of a suspicious object being found in the Creggan area.
"Local residents have had to leave their homes and great inconvenience caused. The police have a difficult job to do protecting the community and it is important this senseless violence is condemned by all."
