Cold Caller Arrested In East Belfast
Police have arrested a man on suspicion of a number of offences after he was caught cold calling at houses in east Belfast.
Reports emerged on Tuesday morning, 10 September, of a male approaching properties in the Galwally area, asking for access to check water pipes.
Officers credited a member of the public for giving an excellent description of the man which led to his arrest.
The 33-year-old was detained for a range of offences including fraud and possession of class A and B drugs. He is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.
PSNI Chief Inspector Bradley issued a statement following the incident and reminded the public of their rights regarding cold callers.
"I want to thank the public for reporting these incidents to us so quickly," he said.
"Remember it's OK not to open the door if you have any concerns. Speak to the person through the door or window, without actually opening the door to them. Ask them for ID legitimate callers won't be offended and should be carrying official ID.
"Report any activity that raises your suspicions to police immediately on 101, or 999 in an emergency."
Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 492 of 10/09/19. Details can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The public are reminded that further advice on home security can be gained by speaking to a local Crime Prevention Officer on 101. The free Quick Check service is also available by phoning police on 101 to check if callers at your home or business are genuine.

Security Alert Finds Nothing At MLA's Home
A security alert at the North Antrim home of Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has ended without incident. Police were called to the home following a report that a bomb had been left at the house. It is understood an anonymous caller telephoned the MLA's office in Dunloy claiming that an explosive device had been planted.

Army Remove Device In Banbridge GAA Alert
A 'viable' pipe bomb has been found at a GAA ground in County Down. The bomb was found during an overnight alert at the ground on the Ballela Road outside Banbridge. Police have since described the device as "viable" and it has now been removed by the Army Technical Officers.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Police investigate bogus caller robbery
Police are investigating a robbery in the Hillsborough Drive area of east Belfast. A male called at a house shortly after 5pm on Wednesday evening, claiming to be from the Housing Executive. The man, who was not carrying identification, said a letter would have been previously sent to notify the homeowner of the visit.
