Greens Councillor Announced As North Down MLA
Green Party Councillor Rachel Woods has been named as the new MLA for north Down.
Ms Woods, who currently sits on Ards and North Down Borough Council, replaces former party leader Steven Agnew and said she was "delighted" to take up the role.
Mr Agnew served as party leader for seven years before stepping down as an MLA earlier this month to pursue a new career in the renewable energy industry.
His former Constituency Office Manager, Ms Woods grew up in Hollywood and still lives in the seaside town.
"I am passionate about North Down and am determined to serve all the people of the area as best I can," she said upon her appointment.
"There are serious challenges ahead – not least climate breakdown, Brexit and lack of funding for our public services.
"I am determined to face up these challenges and make positive change across our communities."
Ms Woods will serve alongside Green Party Leader Clare Bailey.
The MLA for south Belfast added: "Rachel has bags of ability and a real commitment to making a difference for people.
"I'm excited to see Rachel step up – I'm excited to work with her, along with our Councillors to deliver healthier, happier communities."
