Council Honours Gary Lightbody With Freedom Of The Borough Award
Ards and North Down Borough Council has awarded local musician Gary Lightbody with its highest honour, the Freedom of the Borough.
The Bangor man and lead singer of Snow Patrol earned the accolade for his outstanding contribution to the area by putting it on the map. Lightbody has continually championed his hometown, not least by delivering three huge outdoor concerts in the town's Ward Park.
Responding to the honour on Twitter, the singer offered a humorous thank you by saying: "Well this is a bit bonkers. Many thanks to the council for this. In times gone by this meant you could drive your sheep through the town centre. So apologies in advance for adding to traffic congestion in Bangor."
The Freedom of the Borough is an expression of the high esteem in which the individual is held by the council.
Roadworks Announced In Co Armagh
The Department for Infrastructure has announced a programme of roadworks set to take place in Tandragee, Co Armagh.
This £156,000 scheme will see Mullahead Road improved, with large scale patching over a 3km stretch of road at a number of locations from the Brackagh Road junction to just beyond the Ballyknock Road junction.
Work will begin on Monday 04 November and run until Friday 06 December.
During this time a daily weekday road closure will be in place between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Traffic will be diverted via the Portadown Road and Brackagh Road.
Those travelling in the area should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys.
NI Agriculture Contractors To Undergo Health & Safety Inspections
Agriculture Contractors across Northern Ireland are set to be assessed as part of a health and safety programme.
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) will visit several businesses, focusing on how health and safety is currently managed as well as highlighting where changes (if any) are required to meet the minimum standard required by law and most importantly to keep everyone safe.
HSENI Advisers have already visited over 30 Agriculture Contractors as part of this programme.
Malcolm Downey, Principal Inspector with the Agri-food team said: "Our advisers intend to carry out more visits over the coming months. I would strongly advise you to take up the opportunity to avail of this free and confidential advice as it will be of significant benefit to your business.
"You should also be aware that HSENI Inspectors intend to carry out a programme to inspect those Agriculture Contractors who do not avail of an advisory visit."

A man has died in a workplace accident in Co Armagh. It is believed the man was crushed by a road roller while a new road surface was being laid on the Bog Road, Forkhill, on Wednesday, 31 May. Police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation.

Road death figures are lowest in 50 years
Figures released today by the Department of the Environment have revealed that road deaths in Northern Ireland last year were at the lowest level in 50 years. The total number of road deaths in 2005 totalled 136, the lowest number since 1952 when 133 people lost their lives at at time when there was one eighth of the number of vehicles on the road.
