Arrest Over New IRA Murder Bid On Police
Detectives investigating a police murder bid by the New IRA are conducting a number of searches in Strabane.
A 28 year-old man was arrested in the Co Tyrone town after a mortar device was discovered aimed at a police station on Saturday 07 September.
The device, planted by the New IRA, was left metres away from a number of family homes in the Church View area.
Detectives believe it was "undoubtedly designed" to kill or injure police officers.
A number of searches are being carried out today, Wednesday 27 November, as the investigation progresses.
Detective Inspector Andrew Hamlin from the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation Unit said: "The New IRA were behind the attack and they demonstrated once again that they do not care who is hurt or killed by their violent actions.
"A number of small children were in close proximity to the deadly device and it is disgraceful that their lives were put at risk. A number of older and vulnerable people were also forced to leave the comfort and safety of their own homes."
Police believe that the New IRA members remain living within the community, and advised anyone with information to come forward.
DI Hamlin continued: "Our chances of success are vastly improved by support and information from community as today's search and arrest operation demonstrates. I would strongly urge people to report any suspicions they have about dangerous and illegal activity in our community."
