UFU Welcome Cash Flow Boost For NI Farmers
The Ulster Farmers' Union has welcomed confirmation from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs that 99% of farmers will soon receive their full direct payments.
UFU president, Ivor Ferguson, said the payments of over £280 million represent a significant cash flow boost for farm families at a costly time of year.
"We are, quite rightly, frequent critics of DAERA, but over this the department staff deserve credit for getting these payments out so quickly.
"The success is also down to farmers who have embraced the concept of making applications online – despite the difficulties of many rural areas still have slow or non-existent broadband services," he said.
The payments released this week are on top of advance payments in October and November and should be in farm bank accounts by the end of the week.
Roadworks Announced In Co Down
A key road in the County Down town of Kilkeel is set to close for improvements later this month.
The Department for Infrastructure is launching a £253,000 resurfacing scheme on the Head Road, extending 2.5km from Moyad Road to Carrigenagh Road.
Work on the scheme will begin on Monday 09 December and run until Friday 20 December.
A daily weekday road closure will be in place between 9am and 4.30pm throughout to help facilitate the work. During these times a diversion will be in place via Moyad Road – Bridge Street – Newcastle Street – Newcastle Road – Carrigenagh Road and vice versa.
Drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys.
Enniskillen Public Realm Scheme Reaches Major Milestone
A multi-million public realm scheme in Enniskillen has took a major step forward towards development.
Northern Ireland firm FP McCann has signed on as contractor to deliver the £5.2 million project on behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
This scheme will see Enniskillen town centre enhanced with improvements to footpaths, street lighting, landscaping and street furniture.
Speaking about the appointment, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Siobhán Currie, said: "I am delighted to see the Enniskillen Public Realm Scheme progress to this significant milestone with the appointment of FP McCann as the main contractor following a tender exercise.
"The works will improve the appearance of the town, making Enniskillen an even more attractive place to live, visit, work and do business and will complement revitalisation works already undertaken in Down Street, Cross Street and the Buttermarket."
The design of the scheme was finalised after consultation with members of the public, local businesses and other interested parties and was agreed by the Project Steering Group. The Project Steering Group is chaired by Cllr Paul Blake and includes Councillors from Enniskillen District Electoral Area (DEA) and representatives from the local business community.
The scheme spans Darling, Wesley, Church, High, Townhall, Eden, Water, Market, Middleton, East Bridge and Belmore streets as well as The Diamond, East Bridge Place, Paget Square and Regal Pass.
Work is due to begin in early 2020 with completion expected by November 2021.
This project is being supported with funding from the Department for Communities and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
