Swimmer Dies Off Antrim Coast
A woman has died after getting into difficulty while swimming off the Co Antrim coast.
It's understood the swimmer was one of a group who entered the water in Ballycastle this morning, Monday 09 December.
Emergency services scrambled to the scene after reports of the incident. A second woman who got into difficulty has been taken to Causeway Hospital for treatment for the effects of hypothermia.
The police, Air Ambulance and NI Fire and Rescue Service were all in attendance.
A spokesperson for the NIFRS issued the following statement: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of a woman who tragically died this morning following an incident at Ballycastle beach in the Cushendall Road area.
"We received the call at 8.41am. Two Fire Appliances from Ballycastle Fire Station, along with other emergency services, attended the scene to assist with the safety of two female swimmers.
"Both swimmers were out of the water on arrival of Fire Crews. Firefighters assisted paramedics with CPR.
"The second female was taken to hospital by Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.
"The incident was dealt with at 9.39am."

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE

An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

The Home Fire Safety Check coincides with Fire Safety Week, which runs from September 30th to October 6th. The initiative aims to reduce the number of house fires in Northern Ireland.

Public Safety Minister Edwin Poots has opened a new £4.4m Community Fire Station in Omagh, County Tyrone. The new Community Fire Station & District Headquarters on the Killybrack Road includes onsite facilities for firefighter training and transport and engineering workshops.

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.
