PSNI Warns Against Drink Driving
The PSNI has issued a warning to motorists across Northern Ireland against driving under the influence ahead of the festive season.
Highlighting the stark consequences of getting behind the wheel after a night of celebrating, a police spokesperson told of two young brothers killed by a drink driver in England in 2008.
Ben and Arron Peak died when a motorist who was twice the legal limit crashed into the back of their vehicle in his Range Rover. Their father, Phil Peak, was left with serious spinal injuries.
The incident occurred on the M6 in Staffordshire on 07 June 2008, as the family made their way to Greater Manchester for a day out.
Sadly, Ben and Arron died at the scene after their car was hit from behind by a 4x4. They were just eight and ten years old.
The driver had been drinking beer and sambuca at a wedding and set off the next day after just two hours sleep, a PSNI spokesperson said. They were later jailed for seven years and four months.
Sharing a picture of the two youngsters, police warned: "With more parties and social events this time of year, the risk of people driving under the influence increases.
"I hope this photograph will act as a stark reminder of the cost of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs."
