Former SF President 'Emotional' At Standing Down

Former Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has told of his emotion at stepping down as Louth TD.

The former NI MP and MLA will not seek re-election to Ireland's Dáil in the general election next month.

Mr Adams held the position of Sinn Fein president from 1983 to 2018. He served as Louth TD for nine years after resigning from local politics to run for election in the Republic of Ireland in 2011.

He told of his emotion at bowing out of politics while addressing a party meeting in Dundalk.

"As my term as a TD for Louth comes to an end, I have to confess to being emotional about departing after serving the people of this constituency for nine years," Mr Adams said.

"I am deeply indebted to the citizens who elected me in 2011 and again in 2016 with Imelda Munster.

"Throughout my nine years in Louth, my endeavour was to keep a national focus while delivering locally.

"This included developing alternatives to Brexit, advancing the national cause, co-operating with neighbouring border counties and campaigning for projects like Narrow Water Bridge which as recently as last week we succeeded in getting into the 'New Decade, New Approach' agreement, which enabled the re-establishment of the power sharing government at Stormont."

A notable figure in Irish politics, the 71 year-old became a highly recognised republican after emerging from Northern Ireland's conflict.

The Sinn Fein politician has served as both an MP and MLA for west Belfast.
