Govt Seeks Opinion On Same-Sex Religious Marriage
The Government is seeking public opinions on same-sex religious marriage and conversion entitlements in Northern Ireland.
Published on Monday, the official consultation will run for five weeks and sets out to establish views on implementing same-sex religious marriage locally and whether to allow couples, both of the same and mixed genders, to convert their civil partnership to marriage and vice versa.
It comes after an amendment tabled by Labour MP Conor McGinn to the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Act 2019 was passed by the House of Commons last July.
The legislative changes legalised same-sex civil marriage and opposite sex civil partnerships in Northern Ireland, with effect from 13 January.
The first same-sex couples are expected to tie the knot next month.
