PSNI now have most up to date equipment
The PSNI have now the most up to date equipment to deal with public disorder, Security Minister Jane Kennedy has said.
Ms Kennedy's comments follow the publication of the medical statement and ACPO guidance which allows the PSNI to make operational use of their new water cannons.
"I welcome the publication of the Medical statement and ACPO guidance which now enable PSNI to use the new water cannons purchased last year," the Minister said.
"While I hope their use will be unnecessary, the availability of water cannon provides PSNI with another option to deal with public disorder and may defer the point where police have to deploy baton rounds."
Following discussion with the Northern Ireland Policing Board and ACPO, the purchase of six water cannon by PSNI to be used in public order situations was announced by Ms Kennedy on 18 July 2002.
The first four water cannon's have already been received by police with the remaining two due in late April.
