Man Jailed For Killing Dog With Hammer After Collision
A man who admitted to killing a dog with a hammer has been jailed.
John Boyle, formerly of Ardilea Court in north Belfast, caused unnecessary suffering to a Staffordshire bull terrier after it was knocked down in November 2017.
Following the collision, Mr Boyle killed the dog with a hammer before placing it in a wheelie bin.
Animal welfare officers attended the property and found the dog's body as well as a wooden mallet and metal hammer, both with evidence of dried blood on them. The weapons were seized from the house.
Mr Boyle entered a guilty plea at Belfast Magistrates Court on Tuesday 11 February.
He was sentenced to six months in custody and banned from keeping animals for the next 10 years.
A spokesperson for Belfast City Council, who brought the prosecution, said: "This was a particularly extreme and harrowing case. Council is committed to thoroughly investigating all complaints around animal welfare issues. Council takes its duty in this regard very seriously and we trust this sentencing will serve as a warning to anyone who mistreats animals."

Man doused in petrol during Belfast robbery
The manager of a west Belfast off-licence has been doused with petrol, punched and beaten with a gun during an armed robbery. Two men, one armed with a handgun and another with a claw hammer entered the premises at the Springfield shop at 8:45 on Sunday morning. They ordered the manager behind the counter and demanded he open two safes and a till.

Hero Army Dog Handlers Honoured
Murdered soldiers who worked with specialist 'sniffer' dogs during the Northern Ireland Troubles have been remembered. The 'Red Paw' and its work across Northern Ireland was the subject of a special memorial service held in England at the weekend. It was in honour of the six dog handlers and two sniffer dogs killed in Northern Ireland.

Belfast Council Moves Dog Fouling Campaign North
Belfast City Council is moving its dog fouling campaign to the north of the city, in a bid to crack down on dog litter. The 'Your dog, your job' campaign was launched in west Belfast last month. The Council says it resulted in a reduction of dog litter in the area by just over a quarter (26%).

Pitbull terrier seized from GAA player's home
The USPCA has seized a pit bull terrier believed to be involved in an international dog-fighting ring, from the home of a well known GAA player. The animal was taken from Tyrone GAA player, Ger Cavlan following a planned operation by the PSNI and the USPCA.
