Dissidents Plan Car Bomb Attack On Sinn Fein
Dissident republicans are planning an attack on a member of Sinn Fein using an under car explosive device, the party's deputy leader has said.
Michelle O'Neill said her party was informed on Monday night, 17 February, of the New IRA plot.
She was informed the attack could take place "anywhere in the north" and against any of the party members.
The car bomb is the latest threat against Sinn Fein after Ms O'Neill attended a PSNI Recruitment event with her party colleague Gerry Kelly.
The deputy First Minister said the the PSNI is taking the information "very seriously" and called for the bomb threat to be lifted.
"This is literally a threat against thousands of Sinn Féin members and their families in the north," her statement said.
"I am urging the party's members to be very vigilant at this time.
"This dangerous and disgraceful threat comes at a time when the debate on Irish unity is centre stage.
"And the response of these so-called Republicans is to plan attacks on Sinn Féin members.
"Let me be very clear. Sinn Féin will not be deterred from pursuing our objective of a united Ireland.
"This armed group must withdraw its threat immediately. There is no room for the existence of armed groups. They should disband."
