City Hall To Glow For World Down's Syndrome Day
Belfast City Hall will be illuminated in blue and yellow light later this month in celebration of World Down's Syndrome Day.
Taking place on Saturday 21 March, the occasion marks the vital role those with the genetic irregularity play in our lives and communities.
It will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Down's Syndrome Association of Northern Ireland, a charity that works to support the development of young people with Down's Syndrome and those over 30, often connecting them to support groups in their area.
The main point of contact for families and carers to hospitals and schools, the charity is there to support and guide parents through every aspect of raising a child with Down's Syndrome and offers counselling, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and Makaton training.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Daniel Baker was joined by members of another support group, the Families with Ups and Downs organisation, to make the special announcement.
Belfast City Hall, a Grade A listed building, will be illuminated eighteen times this year to mark various special occasions, including in rainbow colours for Belfast Pride in August, purple for International Women's Day and Green for St Patrick's Day.

NI Study Shows Europe Down Syndrome Link
A study by a team at the University of Ulster show greater proportions of women delaying childbirth has led to rising rates of Down syndrome across Europe. The results published in the European Journal of Human Genetics revealed the proportion of births to mothers aged 35 years and older in Europe increased from 13% in 1990 to 19% in 2009.

Grant Awarded For NI Down's Syndrome Association
A major grant from the Big Lottery Fund has been awarded to a project to support older people with Down’s Syndrome, their parents and their carers. The Down’s Syndrome Association is just one of five organizations in Northern Ireland which has been awarded grants from the Fund’s £1.3m Reaching Out: Connecting Older People programme.

Marathon To Run On Bank Holiday
In spite of pressure from various sides, the 2011 Belfast City Marathon will not be held on a Sunday. It was agreed at a City Council meeting this week that it would continue on May Day, after over plans to move the race from its traditional May Day Bank Holiday to the prior Sunday were opposed.

Major Drug Bust In Omagh Linked To INLA
Detectives from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force have made a significant drug seizure in Omagh. Officers searched a van in the Doogary Road area on Thursday morning, 21st November, and recovered a substantial quantity of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of £750,000.
