'United Approach' Needed To Ensure Safe Return Of Students
A united approach is needed across the UK to ensure that students can safely return to university and college after the Christmas holidays.
In a joint letter to the four Governments of the UK, Alliance Deputy Leader Stephen Farry MP, alongside Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey, Scottish Leader Willie Rennie and Welsh Leader Jane Dodds, called for a uniform approach to student testing ahead of a return to university in January.
Dr Farry said plans should be confirmed before students travel home for the festive period. It comes after growing fears of a repeat of the spike in coronavirus cases seen when students returned in autumn.
Dr Parry said: "We have been clear there needs to be careful planning around the movement of students home at Christmas and back in the New Year, not least with mass asymptomatic testing to keep people safe.
"The Governments were right to work together to agree guidance for Christmas, they now must do the same for students returning in the new year."

Figures released by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) on Thursday August 16 show a record 48,000 grades have been issued to Northern Ireland students across all exam boards.

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.

Rise In Number Of GCSE Students Achieving A*- C Grades
There has been a significant increase in the number of GCSE students achieving the A*- C grades. The proportion of entries awarded A* - C grades has risen by 0.7% this year to 78.7% Education Minister, John O'Dowd, congratulated the students and said they should be proud of all their hard work.

Queen's welcomes overseas students
More than 50 overseas students arrived in Belfast at the weekend to take part in a three-week International Summer School at Queen's University. Now in its fourth year, the Summer School programme, entitled 'Ireland: Northern Perspectives', runs from 19 July to 6 August, and is coordinated by the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's.
