Stormont To Provide Funding For Troubles Pension Scheme
Stormont's Executive Office has confirmed it will provide funding for the Troubles Permanent Disablement Payment Scheme.
The Department of Finance will make the funding available to ensure eligible victims and survivors receive compensation.
UUP MLA and The Executive Office Committee Vice-Chair Doug Beattie MC MLA said: "Firstly I pay tribute to those injured survivors who have refused to give up on this payment scheme. They should not have had to fight for what morally should have been provided to them a long, long time ago. Despite the disrespect repeatedly shown to them, they have carried themselves with dignity throughout.
"It is welcome that The Executive Office has now given an undertaking that they will provide the funding to allow the Troubles Permanent Disablement Payment Scheme to open. Wrangling with the UK Government over long-term funding for the scheme may continue, but injured victims should not be punished any longer.
"The Executive must move immediately to provide certainty around application and payment dates, as well as how those who have waited longest might be prioritised within the scheme."
