School kids taught benefits of sustainable transport
A pilot programme aimed at educating children on the benefits of sustainable transport has been launched by the Roads Service.
Best Foot Forward For Schools will target 30 schools and approximately 1200 Key Stage 2 pupils from across all five Education and Library Boards of Northern Ireland to the benefits of walking, cycling, public transport and car-sharing.
Speaking at the launch of the scheme, Mr Brian Moreland, DRD Roads Service, Transportation Unit, said: “The Best Foot Forward For Schools pilot will introduce children, their parents and teachers to easily accessible travel alternatives and inform them on the health, social and environmental benefits of using sustainable transport on an occasional or regular basis.
“We are delighted with the number of schools that have decided to participate in this pilot programme. The response from head teachers has shown that they are willing to play a vital role in helping to change attitudes towards how we travel.”
The pilot programme consists of classroom-based activities and has been developed to ensure close reference to curricular guidelines in English, mathematics, science and technology, information and communication technology, geography, art and design and physical education.
The Best Foot Forward For Schools programme is part of Travelwise Northern Ireland, an initiative of the Department for Regional Development’s Roads Service. Travelwise NI, launched in October 2003, promotes sustainable modes of transport to employers, commuters and schools encouraging alternatives to the private car particularly for shorter journeys.
