Daniel Carroll Found Guilty Of The Murder Of Brian Phelan
Daniel Martin James Carroll (30)has been found guilty of the murder of Brian Phelan.
Mr Phelan was stabbed multiple times - three times in the neck and twice in the body – in an attack on a remote road near Camlough on the outskirts of Newry in July 2018.
According to reports, Carroll had claimed in court that him and Mr Phelan had gone to the Carrivekeeney Road, which runs up the side of Camlough mountain, to buy quad bikes, when they were approached by "three men with paramilitary links", who then attacked Phelan. Carroll had claimed to know the men but had refused to name them.
However, the defense in the case dismissed this version of events as "complete nonsense".
The jury, made up of six men and five women, deliberated for 90 minutes before delivering a unanimous guilty verdict.
According to a report by the BBC, the judge alleged told Carroll before he was sent down that he would be "sentenced to life imprisonment".
Sentencing is expected to be held in November.
