SF Launch Petition To Extend Voucher Scheme To Younger People
Sinn Féin has launched a petition calling for the High Street Voucher Scheme to be extended to include 16 and 17 year-olds.
Speaking after launching an online petition, the Foyle MLA Pádraig Delargy said: "The £100 High Street Voucher scheme should be extended to include young people at 16 and 17.
"It's unfair that they have been excluded given the fact they are eligible to work, pay tax and contribute to our economy like everyone else.
"That's why I have launched a petition urging the DUP Economy Minister to give these young people the High Street Voucher to play their part in boosting our economy.
"I would urge people sign this petition and keep the pressure on the Minister to reverse the decision to exclude them."
The petition can be found here.
New Assured Skills Collaborative Welding Academy Announced
A new Assured Skills Collaborative Welding Academy at Southern Regional College, with 12 training places, has been announced by Economy Minister Gordon Lyons.
Successful applicants to the Academy will receive industry standard welding training that will provide them with the skills to take up potential welding roles with companies in Armagh, Craigavon and the surrounding area.
This is the second in a series of three welding Assured Skills Academies with Southern Regional college, with a further one planned for the current financial year.
Welcoming the Academy, Economy Minister Gordon Lyons said: "I am pleased to announce this collaborative Assured Skills Welding Academy at Southern Regional College.
"Businesses in the local engineering and fabrication sectors are continually seeking new people with these specialist skills. This collaborative approach at Southern Regional College will enable participants to gain valuable skills and, on successful completion, receive a Level 2 City & Guilds welding qualification which will give them a great opportunity to pursue a rewarding career.
"With no previous experience in welding required and £155 per week training allowance provided to participants on the Academy, I urge anyone who is interested to apply."
The pre-employment Academy consists of a seven-week intensive training course during which participants will study a Level 2 City and Guilds Award in MIG Welding Skills. Following completion of the training, participants will be guaranteed an interview to take up a welding position at one of the participating companies.
It is planned to deliver the Academy over the following dates:
• Monday 22 November 2021 to Friday 7 January 2022 – college learning
• Monday 10 January 2022 to Friday 21 January 2022 – workplace consolidation
Applicants must be at least 18 years old by Monday 22 November 2021 and eligible to work in the UK.
This opportunity is not open to anyone currently employed within the manufacturing and engineering sector.
Applications are open until noon on Friday 29 October.
PSNI Urged To Outline Measures To Prevent Repeat Of Sarah Everard Case In NI
The Alliance Party has called on the PSNI and other major institutions to outline the measures they are taking to prevent a repeat of the Sarah Everard case occurring here,
Alliance Policing Board representative John Blair MLA was speaking after raising the matter in the Assembly this morning.
Metropolitan police officer Wayne Couzens has been jailed for the kidnap, rape and murder of Ms Everard in London. The case has raised questions over trust in the police and criminal justice system, with Met Police in particular being asked regarding its failure to stop him.
Mr Blair said: "Like so many others, I was horrified and outraged a police officer abused his position of power and authority to abduct, rape and murder Sarah Everard. There is no doubt this case has had an impact beyond just London.
"Wayne Couzens was previously subject to three separate allegations of indecent exposure and it is unequivocally apparent there have been fundamental failings of the Met Police and the Kent Police to properly investigate those allegations and failure of the vetting system.
"It is entirely unacceptable those who are responsible for enforcing the law and protecting the public to have such reprehensible disregard for their safety. I am pleased the PSNI have started the conversation including stakeholder engagement, which I have been pleased to be involved with. But we need to hear more from the police and others about what measures are in place to ensure we do not have a repeat case here.
"Misogyny is deeply rooted into our institutions. To end it, we need to face up to it – commission research, allocate resources and deploy funding to meet the challenges presented, and establish a society where women are safe.
"One life sentence for one man is not justice for the fear every woman has felt because of the clear failures in those who are meant to protect us all. That will not change until the threat of gender-based violence within our policing structures and elsewhere is removed."
