President of the European Parliament to address UU

The President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox is to give a lecture on the role of Europe as a force for reconciliation at the University of Ulster’s Magee campus next week.

Mr Cox has been a member of the European Parliament since 1989, representing the constituency of Munster. He was elected President in January 2002.

His address forms part of a series of lectures on peacekeeping, at the invitation of the Tip O’Neill Chair, Professor John Hume.

The Tip O’ Neill Chair, funded by the Ireland Funds, commemorates the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, who was well known for his support of the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Professor Hume has held the Chair since 2002 and previous speakers have included President Bill Clinton, An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi and former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard.
