UU awarded EU research funding

The University of Ulster's international conflict research centre, INCORE, has been awarded EU funding for a project that focuses on politicians’ attitudes towards building community harmony.

Researchers will interview the province’s Assembly Members and local and district councillors about their views on community relations.

It is the first-ever such study focused explicitly on the views of Northern Ireland’s public representatives.

INCORE Director Professor Gillian Robinson said: “There has been an ongoing review process about community relations and while there may have been conversations and exchanges of views with politicians, there has not been a comprehensive assessment of their views on community relations work or how they see their contribution to the debate.

“This is the first opportunity that they will have had to give their views on the nature of community relations, the work that it involves and how they see their own role.

“The aim of the project is to acquire a greater understanding of their views."

The politicians are being asked to complete a questionnaire and INCORE researchers will also conduct interviews with some of them.

The 'Politicians and Community Relations' project is being funded by the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation through the European Directorate of the Community Relations Council.

INCORE said the project aims to establish politicians’ views are on a wide range of related issues.

The results will be published after a major conference later this year.
