New EU member states opportunity to seize initiative
Northern Ireland should seize the opportunities that enlargement presents and welcome the ten new countries poised to join the European Union.
That was the message delivered by Northern Ireland’s Minister for Europe, Ian Pearson, MP, at a gala reception at the Waterfront Hall to mark enlargement of the EU.
Speaking at the reception, Mr Pearson said enlargement was good for both Europe and Northern Ireland.
"It is an opportunity to cement stability in Europe, and also provides considerable benefits to businesses here," the Minister said.
"There are now more trade opportunities in prospect, as new markets open up. There will also be opportunities to stimulate investment in Northern Ireland, while local businesses can look forward to a larger single market with trade barriers removed between the current EU and new member states.
"We need to continue to look outwards and forwards, and project an image of Northern Ireland as a successful region of Europe; a region welcoming those who want to live, work, study and invest here; a region that derives the maximum benefit from EU membership and makes a positive, effective contribution to the European Union."
The ten countries that will join the European Union on 1 May this year are Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
