Two die in drowning tragedy off Donegal coast

Two men have drowned following a boating accident off the Co Donegal coast over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The bodies of Thomas Boyd, 69, from Seymore Gardens, and his son-in-law John January, 42, from Abbeydale, both in Londonderry, were recovered on Monday in waters off Tramore Beach, near Downings.

The alarm was raised after a body, later identified as that of Mr January, was spotted floating in the water by a jet skier.

A search and rescue operation then began in mid-afternoon and soon Mr Boyd's body was discovered close to a capsized boat taken out by both victims earlier that morning.

Both men are believed to have been wearing life jackets when their bodies were discovered.

A rescue helicopter from neighbouring Co Sligo and local coastguards took part in the search.
