Online resource offers help with 'green' business regulations
A new website aimed at helping small businesses in Northern Ireland understand the environmental legislation affecting their work has been launched.
NetRegs - www.netregs.gov.uk – offers general advice on environmental issues such as waste, storage of materials and water and energy efficiencies, as well as information on forthcoming legislation and good practice advice that can help businesses save money.
Commenting on the site, Richard Rogers, Chief Executive of DOE’s Environment & Heritage Service said: "We recognise that many smaller businesses have limited time and resources to keep on top of their environmental obligations and that is why we have set up the NetRegs website, to give them the help they need to protect both the environment and their business."
Federation of Small Businesses’, Parliamentary Officer for Northern Ireland, Glynn Roberts added: "NetRegs is a crucial resource for smaller businesses affected by increasing amounts of legislation. We welcome this move by EHS to provide practical help to the small business community to remain compliant with the regulations governing their activities."
It is estimated that smaller businesses in the UK generate about 60% of commercial waste and are responsible for as much as 80% of pollution incidents.
Recent research conducted into the environmental behaviour of small businesses in Northern Ireland (SME-nvironment 2003), revealed that only 20% of respondents could name any environmental legislation. A mere 22% had heard of the Duty of Care Regulations, which apply to all businesses.
The NetRegs website, developed by EHS in partnership with the UK’s other environmental regulators, also provides guidance on the environmental regulations governing 50 industry sectors.
