Report reveals fall in recorded crimes
Recorded crime in Northern Ireland has fallen over past last year, according to official statistics from the PSNI.
The figures, for the period 1st April 2003 to 31st March 2004, recorded a total of 127,953 offences, a decrease of 14,543 on the previous year.
There were decreases across six of the nine main offence classes (burglary, theft, robbery, fraud & forgery, criminal damage and offences against the state) compared with increases in the remaining three offence classes (offences against the person, sexual offences and other notifiable offences).
Offences of a sexual nature showed a significant increase with more than 300 sex offences committed.
The number of racial incidents doubled from to 453 in 2003/04 while the number of homophobic incidents also doubled from 35 to 71.
The number of drug seizures recorded by the police increased from 1,781 to 2,347 while number of people arrested for drugs related offences rose from 1,295 to 1,754.
Casualties resulting from paramilitary-style attacks dropped by 11 to 298 with loyalists responsible for around two thirds of all victims compared with a third to republicans.
Welcoming today's figures, Chairman of the Policing Board, Professor Desmond Rea said the results demonstrated "that issues which affect everyday life within our community are being tackled by the police right across Northern Ireland".
“It is clear from the overall results that good police work, and specific initiatives undertaken by the PSNI in the last year to proactively tackle vehicle crime and burglary have been very successful," Professor Rea said. "This year there have been real reductions in recorded crime across six of the nine main offence classes; the PSNI must aim to maintain this success in the year ahead and address those areas where results have not been achieved."
