People Need To Know When They Will Get Energy Support Payments
The British Government must urgently spell out when people here will get the £400 energy support and £200 heating oil payments, Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said.
The East Derry MLA said: "The British government have provided no answers for families waiting on the £400 energy support payment and the now £200 oil payment.
"It is over six months since this support was announced and despite the DUP claiming the payments would be made in November, there is still no sign of it.
"And let us be clear, if we had an Executive this payment could already be in people's pockets - the DUP blockade of the institutions is punishing workers and families.
"People are struggling right now with their energy bills and they deserve to know when they will receive the payment they are entitled to.
"The increase announced for families waiting on the oil payment will also be of no comfort as again there are still no details as to how it will be paid.
"The British government must urgently provide clarity on when these energy support payments will be made to give families certainty as winter deepens."
SDLP Meets With IFA Over Joint Ireland And Britain 2028 Bid
A delegation of SDLP ministers have met with the Irish Football Association (IFA) at Windsor Park to discuss the joint Ireland and Britain 2028 bid and general community and football issues.
Following the meeting SDLP Sports Spokesperson Justin McNulty said it was imperative that Casement Park was built in time for the tournament and that the opportunity to bring European Championship football to the North was not missed.
Newry & Armagh MLA Mr McNulty said: "The SDLP had a very productive meeting with the IFA at Windsor Park this week. It was extremely exciting to hear more details about the joint Euro 2028 bid and I welcome the spirit of cooperation between the UK and Irish governments to make the possibility of hosting this tournament a reality. I really feel that this is an opportunity to inspire generations to come and we will support the bid in any way we can.
"If we want to host matches featuring some of the world's top teams in the North then we need to see Casement Park built in time for the tournament. I realise that there are a number of challenges ahead of us to make this happen, but it would be a real failure of political leadership if we are the only part of these islands not involved. This bid is an opportunity to secure a large investment into our local economy and to shine a positive spotlight on everything we have to offer here, while creating a sporting legacy for future generations to benefit from.
"During our meeting we also discussed the potential of sport as a vehicle to bring people together. I have long been an advocate for the powerful role sport can play in reconciliation on this island having seen it firsthand on numerous occasions over the years. Encouraging children and young people to take part in sport from an early age will help them forge lasting friendships and relationships with teams right across our communities. The Euros bid is an opportunity for people right across this island to come together and work towards a positive goal, showing we're much stronger when we focus on what unites us than on what separates us."
DUP MPs Will Oppose Govt Plans To Increase Fuel Duty
East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has said that DUP MPs will oppose the Government's plans to increase fuel duty by 23%.
The DUP MP said: "The unprecedented 23% rise in fuel duty from next March will leave motorists collectively billions of pounds worse off and increase the price of fuel at a time when motorists have already been hit by massive inflation.
"It places huge pressure on domiciliary care providers, district nurses and other vital workers who rely on their vehicle. There will be an obvious need for public sector milage rates to be increased in line with this rise. The impact will be also be particularly felt by those who live in rural areas and those businesses which require vehicles for their operations.
"The DUP will be opposing this measure in the House of Commons when it comes to be voted upon."
