SERC 'Have A Go' Sessions To Explore Benefits Of Apprenticeships

As part of NI Apprenticeship Week (NIAW) potential students and parents are being invited to SERC Campuses to explore what an an apprenticeship entails at one of their 'Have a Go' sessions.

Victoria Boyd, Training Programmes Manager at SERC said: "Our Have a Go sessions, will showcase the range of opportunities and skills for apprentices using the latest techniques and state-of-the-art technologies and our Apprenticeship Development Managers will be on hand to answer any queries about the apprenticeship route. So if you have ever wanted to try your hand at mechanics, hairdressing, catering, plumbing, construction, electrics or engineering, and like the idea of earning money while you learn, plan to come along to a 'have a go' session from 4.30pm to 7.00pm at SERC's Lisburn Campus – Monday 6 February; Bangor Campus -Tuesday 7 February; Newtownards Campus – Wednesday 8 February, and Downpatrick Campus – Thursday 9 February.

Victoria added: "SERC partners with 750 employers to support over 1,300 Apprentices. Enrolments for apprenticeships through the College have grown by 10% in 22/23 on the previous year. Working with industry, we continue to grow the skills range on offer through the apprenticeship route, from accountancy to pharmacy services, and starting from September 2023 we will offer new Higher-Level Apprenticeships (HLA) in Cloud Management and Cyber Security. In recognition of the employer partner support enjoyed by the College, our celebrations for NIAW will also include an invitation thank you breakfast and networking event.

NIAW, led by the Department for the Economy (DfE), is an annual week-long celebration which aims to showcase apprenticeships. Building on the resurgence in apprenticeship numbers following the Covid-19 pandemic, the week aims to raise the profile of apprenticeships across Northern Ireland and showcase how apprenticeships can transform the future of apprentices and businesses.

Man Jailed In Connection With Annahilt Cannabis Farm
The PSNI has welcomed the sentencing of a man at Craigavon Crown Court in connection with a cannabis farm disovered in Annahilt in February, 2023. Clive Weir, from the Annahilt area, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and 18 months on licence.

Apprentice Skills Showcased At SERC
On Wednesday 18 January seventy five apprentices from across South Eastern Regional College (SERC) participated in a day long Inter-Campus Skillbuild competition. The event was one of a series of Skillbuild Northern Ireland Inter-Campus College competitions taking place throughout the province.

New All Age Apprenticeships Initiative Launched
A new All Age Apprenticeships initiative, designed to provide opportunities for more people to embark on a career of their choice, has been launched by the Department for the Economy. The initiative is in response to the Department's recent budget consultation response which evidenced the importance of all age apprenticeships.

Further Six Projects In Shared Education Programme
A further six projects involving over 20 schools have signed up to the second call in the Shared Education Campuses Programme. The Shared Education Campuses Programme was launched in January 2014 by Minister for Education John O'Dowd. Under the Programme the Department is aiming to invest in projects involving the need for new shared facilities.

15 Expressions Of Interest In Shared Education Campuses Programme
News that 15 expressions of interest have been lodged with the Department under the Shared Education Campuses Programme has been welcomed by Education Minister John O'Dowd. The Minister launched the Shared Education Campuses Programme in January, with a deadline of 31 March for receipt for expressions of interest.
