Two textile firms to axe 260 jobs in North West
Two companies have announced separate job cuts totalling 260 employees in Co Londonderry today.
Limavady-based firm, Courtaulds confirmed that it was closing its plant in the town with the loss of 185 jobs.
Management said that it intended to stop sewing, cutting and other support operations at the factory in what was described as "a cost-cutting exercise to become more competitive".
Ulster Unionist MLA David McClarty described the news as "a huge setback for the town".
“Courtaulds’ announcement has taken the whole community by surprise as it came completely out of the blue. It is a black day for Limavady which has suffered considerably from the decline of the textile industry over the past number of years," he added.
Also in the north west textiles manufacturer Invista is to axe 75 jobs at its factory in Maydown. The firm said the jobs were going as part of a restructuring exercise.
The company currently employs about 500 staff at Maydown at the site of the former DuPont plant.
Mr McClarty said the Limavady losses coupled with the 75 going at the former Du Pont plant made it a doubly dark day for the North West.

Over 100 textile jobs to go in north-west
Over 100 jobs are to go at two textile firms in the north-west, it was confirmed today. Strabane based hosiery factory Adria and Londonderry based Glenaden Shirts will axe 118 jobs between them because of a drop in orders. Adria said 65 job losses would be in fine gauge knitting, dying and the cessation of heavy gauge knitting.

North-west textile industry gets jobs brief
Textiles manufacturer Fruit of the Loom have announced a decision to go ahead with the production of a line of men’s underwear for the European market. It is hope that the range will secure much-needed jobs for the company, which currently employs around 650 workers at the two remaining plants at Buncrana and Campsie.
