Minister highlights importance of renewable energy
Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister, Barry Gardiner today launched a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of developing and using Northern Ireland’s renewable energy resources.
An Action Renewables television advertising campaign, starting today, will demonstrate the link between increasing electricity consumption and global warming. It will also highlight Northern Ireland’s many opportunities to generate electricity from renewable energy sources.
Mr Gardiner said: “No one should ignore the threat of global warming. The current blockbuster film, 'The Day After Tomorrow’, offers a dramatic view of the possible effects of climate change, but the reality is that we must do everything possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, which contribute to climate change."
Action Renewables Director, Andy McCrea, added: “The study identifies a total of 1134MW of potential renewable energy generating capacity. If this was to be installed, it would result in a saving of over 2.5million tonnes in carbon dioxide and in the process, could create 110 jobs.
“The survey investigates all potential renewable energy technologies and will be a significant aid to Government and other agencies willing to take a strategic approach to the development of alternative energy sources.”
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment has joined forces with the Viridian Group, in establishing ‘Action Renewables’ to stimulate awareness of conventional energy use and of the range of solutions available through renewable energy technologies.

The newly re-elected MEP (pictured) appeared before the Climate Change Inquiry held by the Assembly Environment Committee last week.
