John Finucane Urged To Rethink Decision To Address IRA Commemoration Event

Sinn Féin's John Finucane has been urged to rethink his decision to address an IRA commemoration event this coming weekend.

The North Belfast MP is due to be the main speaker the 'South Armagh Volunteers Commemoration' ceremony in Mullaghbawn in Armagh on Sunday, in honour of the IRA's South Armagh Brigade.

Calling on Mr Finucane to consider his decision, Alliance MLA Sorcha Eastwood said: "Families and friends have the right to remember their dead in a respectful manner.

"However, that crosses a line when it becomes a glorification of terrorism. People are obviously entitled to their own perspective but not to their own truth. There was always an alternative to terrorist violence - thousands of people proved otherwise by sticking to purely peaceful, political means to attempt and achieve their goals over the past decades.

"Sinn Féin cannot on one hand claim Michelle O'Neill is a First Minister for all but on the other, attend and speak at events which glorify the actions of the IRA. Not only does it bring huge hurt to the victims of terrorism but it sends out the wrong message to dissident groups today and those they seek to recruit.

"I call on John Finucane to rethink his addressing this event and instead think about the impact his participation would have."

SF Urges People To Contact Police Following Large Group Fight At Train Station

Sinn Féin have appealed for anyone with information about a large group fight at Ballymoney train station to contact police.

Describing the incident as "shocking and horrific", North Antrim MLA Philip McGuigan said: "Footage circulating on social media of crowds of people fighting at a train station in Ballymoney is shocking and deeply concerning.

"The horrific scenes in this footage have resulted in a teenager being taken to hospital and a number of others injured.

"There is no place for this type of activity, and people using public transport at the time were badly shaken up.

"I have spoken with the PSNI this morning and made it clear that all steps must be taken to ensure this isn't repeated and those responsible are held accountable in the courts.

"Anyone with information on this incident should bring it forward to the police."
