Young Enterprise Funding Cut 'Setting Us Up For Failure In The Future' – Alliance
The Department of Education cutting funding for Young Enterprise (YE) is "setting us up for failure in the future", the Alliance Party has warned.
Funding for the charity which helps young people learn business skills has lost more than half of its annual funding.
Responding to the announcement, Sorcha Eastwood said: "This charity has played a crucial role in developing the enterprise and entrepreneurial skills of young people in Northern Ireland for decades.
"Our young people are our skills and talent pipeline for the future. Therefore these cuts are damaging not just in the here and now, but to NI's economic future- if we want to have a strong economy with young people skilled and ready to play their part in it, cuts to organisations like Young Enterprise are shortsighted and setting us up to fail for the future.
"I am confident that the team at YE will work their way through this with the support of business and community, but it is a shameful situation that an organisation that was front and centre of showcasing the best of Northern Ireland in an acknowledgement of the excellent work that they do, has now been left in this situation. As every day passes, it is clearer than ever that we need an Assembly and Executive in place."
SF Calls For Solidarity For Striking Education Workers
Sinn Féin has called for solidarity with Education Authority staff who are taking strike action to secure a fair pay settlement.
The party's workers' rights spokesperson, MLA Declan Kearney, said: "The striking workers who are taking industrial action for a fair pay settlement deserve our support and solidarity.
"These workers including school bus drivers, escorts, maintenance and catering staff, classroom assistants, playground supervisors, school administrative staff, cleaners, building supervisors and ground maintenance staff are essential to the running of our schools.
"They deserve fair pay and decent working conditions.
"Sinn Féin is clear, these workers should receive the pay settlement to which they are entitled.
"It is vital this issue is resolved appropriately, so that normal service can resume.
"Ultimately, these workers who have been forced to take industrial and strike action need more than just our support and solidarity; they require an Executive which stands up for workers' rights and is committed to defending public services."
Paisley Congratulates Michael Dunlop On Isle Of Man TT Success
DUP North Antrim MP Ian Paisley has offered his congratulations to Michael Dunlop on his success at the Isle of Man TT races, as he inches closer to equalling what was the unbeatable record of his uncle Joey Dunlop.
The DUP MP said: "It is obvious that he will one day soon surpass that island race record.
"This is a magnificent success and more so as it is not a factory machine that Michael races for but his own and private sponsors machine. This is a truly excellent result. In fact nothing could be more fitting for the Dunlop family that this record remains in the family. I know Michael's family will be so proud of him as are we all. He risks all for this sport and is a true champion.
"Michael has been recognised by his town when he received the freedom of Ballymoney some years ago. It's now time for him to receive a national honour for his sporting success and I would urge the government to move immediately with my proposal. Motorbike racing is in the DNA of Northern Ireland sport. A national honour and recognition is important to mark this.
"Well done Michael."
