Increased Support For Families On Universal Credit
Families receiving Universal Credit (UC) will be able to claim back more of their childcare costs from 28 June.
The maximum amount that can be claimed is due to increase from June 28, meaning families will be able to claim up to 85% of childcare costs. For a single child, childcare support will increase from £646.35 up to £950.92, and for two or more children from £1108.04 to £1630.15.
Welcoming the news, Alliance Communities spokesperson Kellie Armstrong MLA, said: "The cost of childcare in Northern Ireland right now is staggering. It can be as expensive as a mortgage or rent, and many parents and caregivers are left simply unable to work as the cost of childcare is so prohibitive. This increase in support will go some way to helping working families on UC," said Ms Armstrong.
"By helping families to afford childcare, we enable more people to go into employment and to move out of poverty.
"Back in 2021 when I was Vice-Chair of the Communities Committee, we brought in help for families by enabling discretionary support to be used to make advance payment for initial childcare costs when a parent started working.
"These new measures are incredibly welcome, and Alliance remains committed to supporting families and championing policies dedicated to reducing the financial pressures on working families during these very difficult economic circumstances."
