NI geology book launched
The geological history of Northern Ireland over the past 900 million years has been detailed in a new book.
Published by the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, part of the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment, ‘The Geology of Northern Ireland – Our Natural Foundation’ tells the tale of a journey that involves Northern Ireland being submerged by deep oceans, baked in hot deserts and finally frozen by the last ice age.
The book was launched in Parliament Buildings today by the Permanent Secretary of DETI, Bruce Robinson, Dr David Falvey, the Executive Director of the British Geological Survey and Garth Earls, the Director of the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland.
Commenting on the book, Mr Robinson said: “This book is unique in terms of design and scientific presentation. And I believe that most people, whether geologists or not, will find many items of interest in this publication. Quite simply this book is a marvellous achievement.”
The book also features a liberal use of photographs, diagrams and colour illustrations.
Dr Falvey added: “This book will definitely attract attention from people who appreciate scenery and landscapes. This is echoed by the very positive reception that the book has received from independent reviewers.”
The book describes the 1:250,000 geological map of Northern Ireland and carries the colour theme of the map into the pages of the book. Whilst the publication represents a scientific milestone it is designed to appeal to a wide audience.
It includes information on water resources, geological hazards, minerals, oil and gas and is available from all good bookshops.

Map Shows Radon Gas 'At Risk' Areas Across NI
A new map has been produced to highlight areas in Northern Ireland considered "at risk" for radon gas. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps into homes from the ground. Long term exposure can lead to cancer and it is estimated that every year there are about 1,000 radon linked lung cancer deaths in the UK.

Quake Aftershocks Could Be Felt 'For Days'
It has been claimed that aftershocks from two earthquakes which struck the Irish Sea at the weekend, could be felt for a number of days. On Sunday, a small quake was recorded at 5.30am, with a second, stronger quake recorded at a depth of 5km at 10am.

NI Libraries Given £1m To Buy New Books
Funding of £1 million has been announced for libraries across Northern Ireland to buy new books. Welcoming the delivery of new stock at Lisburn City Library, Communities Minister Gordon Lyons, said: "I'm delighted to visit Lisburn City Library to mark World Book Day and to welcome the newly arrived stock of books.
