Alliance Welcomes New Laws To Protect Sexual Violence Victims
Alliance has welcomed the introduction of new laws to protect the privacy and anonymity of victims and suspects in sexual offence cases.
Alliance Justice spokesperson Stewart Dickson MLA said he hoped the commencement of the new laws, introduced by Naomi Long while she was Justice Minister, will bring further protections to victims of sexual violence in NI.
East Antrim MLA Mr Dickson, said: "The commencement of these parts of this legislation marks another stage in the delivery of the protections Naomi Long pledged she'd bring in when in post as Justice Minister.
"I hope it strengthens protections for those who are most in need of it, namely the victims in these sexual offence cases. Excluding the public in serious cases in particular will also give confidence to victims.
"My thanks go to Sir John for his review, Naomi Long for bringing this legislation forward and the Department of Justice for working on it. I hope the most vulnerable in our society will feel strengthened today as a result."
200 Council Vehicles Now Running In Low Carbon HVO Fuel
Belfast City Council is continuing to transition its vehicle fleet to run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
The fuel switch was agreed by the council in December 2022, following a successful trial during the summer.
HVO is a low carbon, zero sulphur fuel and is manufactured from waste renewable materials such as rapeseed and sunflower oil.
HVO fuel eliminates up to 90% of CO2 emissions when compared to fossil diesel and significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Ryan Murphy spoke about the latest developments and said: "The aim to transition Belfast to a climate resilient, low carbon city within a generation is ongoing.
"As a Council we recognised the need for a cleaner, and more sustainable alternative to diesel and I am delighted that diesel fuel used in 200 council vehicles including HGV’s and street sweepers have now switched to HVO- with no modifications to vehicles needed.
"This switch not only reduces carbon emissions but aims to improve air quality across the city. Additionally, HVO is odourless, improves fuel efficiency, has zero palm oil content and is completely biodegradable."

Gas Price Hike 'Fuels Winter Woes'
The gas supplier, Firmus Energy has ended its previously announced summer price freeze and is set to increase tariffs by over 35% from 1 October - fuelling fears over 'fuel poverty' among the most needy. It has around 8,500 customers in the greater Belfast area - compared to competitor, Phoenix Gas - that has more than 130,000.

Govt Must Take 'Serious Action' To Reduce Fuel Prices
With 50% of the cost of a litre of petrol or diesel going to the Treasury, the Government must take serious action to reduce fuel prices across the United Kingdom, DUP Treasury Spokesman Sammy Wilson has said. Mr Wilson said: "Fuel duty and VAT make up 50% of the cost of our fuel with green taxes attributing another 7%.

Fuel costs hit Ryanair profit margin
Budget airline Ryanair has reported a 26% growth in passenger numbers, but has seen profits hit by high fuel costs. In the third financial quarter, the airline said that it had increased third quarter profits to 36.8 million euro. Traffic grew by 26% to 8.
