Alliance Criticise Cuts To Women's Aid Funding
The Alliance Party has criticised cuts to funding for Women's Aid, making Northern Ireland the only part of the UK where the organisation does not receive any funding from central Government.
Alliance MLA Connie Egan – the Party's violence against women and girls spokesperson - said the move was short-sighted, adding it could have a potentially dangerous impact on those needing urgent help in the future.
She said: "This is extremely disappointing news and will have a real impact on those currently seeking support from Women's Aid locally, and those who will need the service in years to come.
"It is a completely illogical move, that is totally contrary to the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, which the Executive Office is currently consulting on.
"It also signifies another group of vulnerable people the DUP is prepared to sacrifice as its ongoing Stormont boycott continues. The question now remains how many cruel budget cuts will they stand over before recognising the people of Northern Ireland need an Executive working for them."
Michelle O'Neill Meets With Hilary Benn At Stormont
Michelle O'Neill has met with Hilary Benn at Stormont in his new role as the Labour Party's new Shadow British Secretary of State.
Following the meeting, the First Minister Designate said: "We had a welcome opportunity to meet with Hilary Benn in his role as the new Shadow British Secretary of State today.
"Top of our agenda was the need to restore the Executive and Assembly, with local ministers back in and running local departments without delay.
"Every day that one party's boycott of the Executive continues, people are suffering. Whether that's on hospital waiting lists, with rising living costs or savage Tory cuts to public services.
"We have enormous economic opportunities ahead to create good jobs and attract investment and with goodwill, we can seize them and move forward together.
"As incoming First Minister, it is my absolute determination to work together to make politics work and to deliver for workers, families and businesses."
US Special Envoy To Lead Trade Delegation To NI
The Head of the Civil Service in NI, Jayne Brady, has welcomed the news that US Special Envoy to Northern Ireland, Joe Kennedy, will lead a Senior Business Delegation later this month.
Welcoming the news of the four member delegation, Jayne Brady said: "When President Biden came here in April, he spoke of plans for a trade delegation and this announcement reflects the continued commitment of both President Biden and Special Envoy Kennedy to showcasing this place as an attractive location for US investors.
"This is another significant opportunity for our key economic sectors as well as for our academic, cultural, creative and tourism industries. The delegates attending are some of the most innovative, influential, and successful US business leaders to have ever visited us, and I look forward to welcoming them here and showing them everything we have to offer."
Special Envoy Kennedy confirmed that the Honorable Thomas P. DiNapoli, Comptroller, State of New York, Mark Hartney, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, John Murphy, President and Chief Financial Officer, The Coca-Cola Company and Tim Sweeney, President and Chief Executive Officer, Liberty Mutual Insurance, will be joining the delegation.
They will arrive on October 24 for a number of days to meet local business leaders to hear first-hand about our homegrown talent, world-leading R&D and strong entrepreneurial ecosystem. They will also meet established US investors who will share their experiences of success and growth in NI. The delegation will also engage with politicians and well as exploring key tourist attractions.
