BCC Extends Pavement Café Licensing Scheme

Belfast City Council has announced an extension of its pavement café licensing scheme until the end of December.

The council has also launched a consultation on a proposed permanent scheme starting in January 2024.

The temporary scheme was introduced in June 2020 to assist the city's hospitality sector during the recovery period following the Covid-19 lockdown.

A pavement café licence authorises businesses supplying food or drink (in or from premises) to place furniture on a public area for use by customers. This includes cafés, restaurants, pubs and retail outlets providing refreshments.

The temporary pavement café licensing scheme will now be extended until 31 December 2023 with consultation during this time on progressing with a proposed permanent scheme from January 2024.

This will include engagement with existing licensees, the local business community, representatives of organisations supporting disabled people and other government agencies.

A public consultation survey to provide feedback on pavement cafés and the proposed licence scheme is also available on Your Say Belfast at yoursay.belfastcity.gov.uk/

A transition period of three months from January will further be introduced to enable current licensed businesses to continue to operate until the granting of a permanent licence is determined.

There are currently 94 pavement cafés  in Belfast operating with temporary licences.

Public Desperately Need An Executive – SF

The public desperately need an Executive to tackle growing waiting lists, Sinn Féin MLA Linda Dillon has said.

Responding to a report released by the Audit Office, the party's health spokesperson said: "Every one of these alarming figures represents a person suffering, with around 1 in 4 people now on a waiting list.

"This is distressing for patients and their families as life impacting health problems are not being addressed, and in the worst cases people are dying as a result of being diagnosed late.

"One party's blockade of the political institutions is preventing locally elected ministers from supporting patients on waiting lists and working to reduce these.

"The public's patience has run out, they need an Executive that has their backs, and is working to fix the health service and tackle growing waiting lists.

"Savage Tory cuts to our public services should end now and instead deliver proper funding to tackle the huge problems that exist now."

SDLP Welcomes Euro 2028 Joint Bid

The SDLP has welcomed the UK and Ireland's joint bid to host Euro 2028 as a "huge opportunity for the North and the whole of the island".

Sports Spokesperson Justin McNulty has called on all relevant parties to commence discussions immediately to agree how the redevelopment of Casement Park will be financed so that work can begin at the first opportunity.

Newry & Armagh MLA Mr McNulty said: "Confirmation of the successful Euro 2028 bid gives the North and our entire island the chance to showcase its potential as a fantastic host for large-scale sporting events. This tournament will attract fans from all over the world to Belfast and our island, bringing a large boost to our economy and will build a fantastic sporting legacy that everyone can be proud of.

"Our focus must now turn to getting Casement Park built. The Secretary of State has said the British Government will find the money for the redevelopment of the stadium and the Irish Government have offered to help finance the project – the political will is there and we need to get everyone around a table to hammer out the details so that work can commence at Casement without delay."
