SF Welcomes Appointment Of New Interim Chief Constable Of The PSNI
Sinn Féin has welcomed the announcement of a new Interim Chief Constable of the PSNI, but warned that there was work to be done to rebuild trust and confidence in the police.
The Sinn Féin member of the Policing Board, Gerry Kelly, said: "I welcome the decision by the panel set up by the Policing Board to appoint an Interim Chief Constable of the PSNI.
"Jon Boutcher is a very experienced police officer, he has recent experience of working here in the north and he is free to take up the reins with immediate effect.
"I don’t underestimate the scale of the challenges he faces in taking up the role of ICC at this time.
"There is clearly a job of work to do to rebuild trust and confidence in the police with the community, PSNI officers, staff and families following the huge data leak and the recent resignation of Simon Byrne.
"This is the time for all of us in political leadership, in the Policing Board and the PSNI to refocus on the task of delivering an efficient and effective policing service that works with and within the whole community impartially.
"To that end the process of appoint a new Chief Constable is now also under way and I wish Jon Boutcher well in carrying what will be a difficult task until that process is complete."
DfI Announce LED Street Lighting Upgrade Scheme In Newtownards
Street lighting across Newtownards town centre is set to be upgraded on Monday, 23 October, the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has announced.
The LED upgrade scheme will involve the replacement of the existing lights with a new LED street lighting system. The new lighting system will improve the night time environment, through improved quality and uniformity of lighting. The scheme will include Regent Street, Frances Street, Gibson's Lane, Mill Street, High Street, Lower Mary Street, Conway Square, Meeting House Lane, Castle Place and South Street.
The Department has carefully programmed the work operations and traffic management in order to minimise inconvenience to the public. All work involving lane closures will be carried out during off peak times Monday to Friday between 17:30 – 23:30, road users should be aware that some delays may be expected and that additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys.
In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to take extra care when travelling in the vicinity of the works.
The dates and duration of the works will be dependent on the progress and on favourable weather conditions. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and safety advice with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
Subject to weather conditions, the scheme is expected to be completed by mid November 2023.
Alliance Welcomes News Of Paramedics Recruitment
Alliance Health spokespersons Paula Bradshaw MLA and Danny Donnelly MLA have welcomed the announcement from the Department of Health that an additional 48 jobs are to be created for paramedics to join the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS).
Speaking after the announcement was made by officials, East Antrim MLA Mr Donnelly said: "The announcement of an additional 48 jobs to support the NIAS is welcomed but long overdue.
"The NIAS has been crying out for staff and I'm pleased to see the Department for Health is responding to the evident need for additional workforce support which will benefit long-term workforce planning."
South Belfast MLA Ms Bradshaw added: "Today's announcement ushers further success of the NIAS Clinical Response Model and there is no doubt the increase in paramedics joining the NIAS in September 2024 will continue to future-proof the organisation and keep it fighting fit for the benefit of our communities.
"The Permanent Secretary is correct the NIAS provides a vital service right across Northern Ireland, and following the increased struggles across the health sector, we know this move will help the NIAS continue to provide a stellar public service."
