Call For Benefits To Be Brought In Line With Inflation
The Alliance Party has called for benefits to be brought in line with the rate of inflation.
The party's communities spokesperson, Kellie Armstrong, made the call after the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation was announced as 6.7% for September, the same rate as August, meaning prices for good and services are still rising at the same rate as the previous month.
Armstrong said: "The Government uses the September CPI rate of inflation to determine the percentage amount to increase benefits, state pension and other factors.
"Freezing benefits places more children into poverty. Therefore, the Government must update benefits in line with today’s announced CPI rate of 6.7 per cent. If they don’t, they will effectively be taking away money from the most vulnerable.
"The UK is moving from a cost of living crisis into a low income crisis, with the latest figures showing 12 per cent of people in Northern Ireland live in absolute poverty, meaning their household income is less than 60 per cent of the UK median, even before housing costs.
"There is no doubt the ongoing political impasse here is exacerbating this situation by not allowing MLAs to carry out work and put measures in place to help those who could benefit most from that help."

Man Extradited From US Over Historical Child Sex Abuse
A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for a series of indecent assaults on a child in the 1970s. Damien Desmond Anderson, originally from L'Derry, was extradited from the US to face justice. He was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against a female who was 11 years old at the time of the abuse.

Northern Ireland's unemployment rate has risen slightly, according to the latest figures. The latest Labour Force Survey showed Northern Ireland's unemployment rate rose by 0.1 of a percentage point to 5.3% for the period April – June 2004.

Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey welcomed the 'Make the Call' results which saw nearly 11,000 people become, on average, £88 a week better off. The £49.
